Commerce Server Installation_Guide |
|
|
We have successfully upgraded our Commerce Server 2002 to FP1 (you should
hear Champagne chilling in the background) in our test environment. We now
after having written a disaster recovery script, are working with the
customer to upgrade their server in production. We based our script on a
document available on the microsoft website URL below:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/7/0/97075ac6-543c-45e7-b854-ab01376908f4/Installation_Guide.htm
This document states that all the steps must be followed in the same order,
and further that all steps are required. The first step '8' in the document
indicates that the user needs to install 'Application Center 2000 SP2' patch
on the server. Upon running the wizard it indicates that the PID Key that
should be used is the Windows Server 2000 Key that you are installing on.
The installation goes fine, after all is done FP1 seems to work. We do not
own 'Application Center 2000' and our customer refuses to install unless
they are assured that they are not in license violation (I believe that her
uncle is either Sarbanes, or Oxley).
My main question is:
Do we need to own Application Center 2000 to run FP1. I don't mean
technically but to be within the license agreement.
Do we need to have Application Center 2000 to run FP1. Now I do mean
technically, could this be a mistake, and needs to be optionally installed
only if the server utilizes Application Center 2000.
Is the purpose of the install of Application Center 2000 SP2 only for the
install routine to utilize some components which are installed during this
process, and that we are not installing a version of Application Center
2000.
I have called Microsoft and contacted the Licensing Department and they are
researching but no answer yet. Anybody know.
Thanks,

If you are using the "staging" features then you will need Application
Center 2000 (and of course a license to run it) but I don't "believe" this
is a requirement for running FP1.

Jeff,
Below is a piece of a document found on the Microsoft Site which states that
we must install all of the below 14 software patches, and in the order
listed below. Number 8 (eight) asks for the 'Application Center 2002 SP2'
patch. We read this and assumed that this was the case and therefore have
never tried going through the process without installing it. Do you have a
personal experience with performing this upgrade to FP1 as well as not
having installed the 'Application Center 2002 SP2' during the process? The
entire problem may be that this document is incorrect and that we don't need
'Application Center 2000 SP2' at all. I have made several calls to
Microsoft since last night and have not been able to get anybody who knows,
meanwhile our window of oppertunity for install this is shrinking. In your
previous post you mentioned 'Staging' which I am not familliar with this
feature, but it is mentioned in the 'Important' clause below step 8 and
before step 9.
Thanks in advance for you response.
Byron...
Commerce Server 2002 FP1 Software Requirements
Install the following prerequisite software on the computer that will run
Commerce Server 2002 Feature Pack 1 (FP1):
Important You must install the following software in the order listed.
1.. Microsoft® Windows ServerT 2003
OR
Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2000 Advanced Server.
a.. Run the Setup program and observe the following requirements:
Format the partition with the NTFS file system. You must install
Commerce Server 2002 FP1 to an NTFS volume; however, not every volume on
your computer must be NTFS. If the existing partition is file allocation
table (FAT) or FAT32, you have the option to convert to NTFS. When prompted,
select NTFS.
b.. Use only alphanumeric characters in the computer name.
Note Commerce Server 2002 Feature Pack 1 does not run on Commerce
Server 2002 Developer Edition when the operating system is Windows 2000
Professional.
c.. IIS Configuration Requirements:
The Commerce Profile services continually retrieve data from the SQL
database. The SQL OLE DB provider allocates large contiguous blocks on
demand to perform these operations. These allocations are performed in the
virtual memory address space of the IIS process. If this process is
approaching the process limit for virtual memory, errors will occur.
Important After you install Windows 2000 Server, you must configure
Microsoft Information Services (IIS) 5.0 to prevent each process from using
the available virtual memory, and to optimize IIS. For recommendations to
optimize IIS 5.0, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article number Q322816,
available at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=44252.
OR
Windows XP Professional
a.. Installing Commerce Server 2002 Feature Pack 1 on Windows XP
Professional has the same requirements as installing Commerce Server 2002
Developer Edition with SP2/SP3 on Windows XP Professional.
Note You can install Commerce Server 2002 FP1 Help on any computer
that is running Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Professional, Windows
2000 Server, or Windows Server 2003.
Windows 2000 Server critical updates. To install all Windows 2000
critical updates, go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=16855.
2.. Windows 2000 Advanced Server Service Pack 4. To install Windows 2000
Advanced Server Service Pack 4, go to
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=5596.
3.. Microsoft Visual Basic® Runtime 6.0 with Service Pack 5.
4.. Microsoft SQL ServerT 2000 Enterprise Edition. Commerce Server 2002
FP1 requires an installation of SQL Server 2000 on your Commerce Server 2002
FP1 computer, or an installation on a remote computer to which Commerce
Server 2002 FP1 will have access.
Run the SQL Server 2000 Setup program using the Custom option, and on the
Select Components page, in the Sub-Components box, select Full-Text Search.
5.. SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services. From the Microsoft SQL Server 2000
CD, and run the Analysis Services Setup program.
Important Before you continue with the Commerce Server 2002 FP1
installation, you must restart the computer.
6.. SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition Service Pack 3a. To install SQL
Server 2000 Enterprise Edition Service Pack 3a, go to
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=28434.
7.. SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services Service Pack 3a. To install SQL
Server 2000 Analysis Services Service Pack 3a, go to
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=28434.
8.. Microsoft Application Center 2000 Service Pack 2. To install
Application Center 2000 Service Pack 2, go to
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=28435.
Important You must install Application Center before installing
Commerce Server 2002 FP1, so that you can install the Application Center
staging drivers for the Commerce Server 2002 FP1 resources. If you install
Application Center after Commerce Server 2002 FP1, you can add the staging
drivers by using the Add/Remove Programs option in Control Panel to change
your Commerce Server 2002 FP1 installation.
9.. Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1. To install .NET Framework 1.1, go to
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=28437.
10.. Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) 4.0 with Service Pack 2. You use
MSXML 4.0 when importing product catalogs. To install MSXML 4.0 with Service
Pack 2, go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=28438.
11.. Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) 3.0 with Service Pack 4. MSXML
3.0 is required for backward compatibility with Commerce Server 2002. To
install MSXML 3.0 with Service Pack 4, go to
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=28439.
12.. Windows 2000 Authorization Manager Runtime. You use Windows 2000
Authorization Manager Runtime to set permissions for business user roles.
This version also installs a Windows 2000 Server version of the Windows
Server 2003 Authorization Manager role-based access control API. To install
Windows 2000 Authorization Manager Runtime, go to
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=28440.
13.. Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.8. If Commerce Server 2002
FP1 must connect to a remote computer that is running SQL Server, we
recommended that you install MDAC 2.8 on your computers that are running
Commerce Server 2002 FP1, SQL Server 2000, and Analysis Services. To install
MDAC 2.8, go to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=28441.
14.. Microsoft Commerce Server 2002 with Service Pack 2. You must install
Microsoft Commerce Server 2002 with Service Pack 2 before you install
Commerce Server 2002 FP1.
Important If you want to install the Promotion Code Generator, which is
required for coupon discounts, you must install Message Queuing (also known
as MSMQ) on you your Domain Controller. You cannot install Message Queuing
on a server until you join the server to the domain.

Byron,
I'm "reasonably" sure (almost absolutely) that FP1 does NOT require
Application Center 2002 unless you plan to use the "staging" features. The
FP1 install guide asks you to have Application Center 2002 SP2 installed
"before" FP1 so that the "staging drivers" are automatically installed. I've
done a clean install of CS2002 and FP1 without having App Center installed
and it works just fine.
If you're still concerned, open a product support case with MS. They will
put you in touch with the CS team (via callback) within a few hours. If
you're an MS partner you should "own" several free support cases which you
can use.

I have upgraded several development, staging and production servers from
CS2002 to CS2002 FP1 without installing Application Center 2000, because we
already had a staging solution in place and weren't planning to use the FP1
staging feature. I can't comment on the licensing issues but I believe
technically the document is incorrect in stating that you must install all
of the listed patches. I just applied common sense and didn't apply patches
to software I wasn't using.

You don't necessarily need App Center for FP1 unless you want to use it for
staging Catalog and Marketing data.

My common sense told me the someone at Microsoft was lazy and utilizing some
components of the 'Application Center 2000 SP2' patch instead of creating
their own wizard. How common is that?
