Need Win2k3 DNS Assistance |
|
|
I am in the process of upgrading from NT 4 to Win2k3 on a small
corporate network with one sever and 25 workstations. Currently we
have no internal DNS server and our domain name is just OURDOMAIN (no
'.' in the name). I have 2 questions hopefully someone may be able
to help me with:
1. Do I need to have a DNS server before updating windows and
installing AD, or can I just add DNS as part of the upgrade process.
2. Is it necessary to change OURDOMAIN name to something like
OURDOMAIN.com?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
~ Chris |

1. You need DNS before Active Directory can be installed.
2. You can keep OURDOMAIN as the NetBIOS domain name, but the Active
Directory DNS name needs to have a "." in the name. Not necessarily .com, it
could be .local, .lan or .anything, it just needs to be a .something or
other.

Re: Need Win2k3 DNS Assistance |

Kevin thank for you help. We do not have any 'real' network
administrators and this task is proving to be daunting. Just to make
sure I do this properly:
1. I should change our single zone labeled domain OURDOMAIN to
local.OURDOMAIN on NT before upgrading. This will cause Win2k3 to
adopt this name as its primary DNS suffix.
2. The second issue I'm not so sure about. Can I install DNS after
upgrading to Win2k3, but before running DCPromo, and point the server
to itself for DNS? OR do I have to create a separate DNS server before
running any updates? I don't really have any machines to do this
with. The only possibility would be to temporally convert a desktop to
a DNS server until to updates are complete, if that would work.
Thanks again,
~ Chris |

If you are asking about the domain suffix on the NT4 TCP/IP Properties, yes,
change the suffix. This will prevent a disjointed name space after DCPROMO.

During DCPROMO the Active Directory installation wizard will ask if you want
it to install and configure DNS for you, since DNS is required (It will set
the DNS IP to 127.0.0.1).
After DCPRROMO is done you will need to change the DNS IP from 127.0.0.1 to
the actual IP of the private interface. It will also likely create a "."
Forward lookup zone, delete that zone if you need internet access.
