Can't Install WSS SP2 on Server 2003 |
|
|
I have SBS2003 which went through the transition pack up upgrade it to
the full server version. Today I went to Microsoft Update to install
all the latest fixes that came out and it tells me that I need to
install WSS SP2 before I can install anything else. When I try to
install WSS SP2 it comes up with this error: "The
update cannot be applied."
Would anyone here know why WSS SP2 won't install? I searched the web
and couldn't come up with anything. I have Server 2003 SP1 installed.
I do have WSS SP1 installed already.
Thanks for any tips you might have for me.

Possibly because it's an upgrade for the standalone version of WSS and not
for the version of WSS that comes with SBS 2003. It seems highly unlikely
(but does at least make sense of the error message) but if you want to check
this aspect further ask in microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs

There is no such thing as a SBS only WSS patch for Sharepoint, Mike.
There's no reason this patch should fail like this.
He's now normal Sharepoint and no longer a SBS box.

For the benefit of all... any service pack that is 'normal' Sharepoint
works on our boxes because we 'are' normal Sharepoint as well.

normal but not identical.
For instance we've had people who have SBS 2003 and have somehow destroyed
their WSS installation and want to know if they can just install standalone
WSS. Well they can, but it won't get them back to the WSS they had when they
installed it as a part of SBS 2003 so they would be missing functionality
that only comes with "your" WSS.
In this case I did say it was "highly unlikely" but if there had been a
special SP2 for the SBS "version" then your newsgoup would be the place to
ask - unless of course you read all messages here :)
I don't have an answer as to why WSS SP2 shouldn't install. I've never come
across this message being reported here (which was another reason for
thinking it *might* have something to do with all the SBS changes he wrote
that he had just done ...)

Note that SP2 is very gentle when installing, if you have edited any of
the "common" files, such as ows.js. SP2 does not update those files and
skips right over them. This means that any service pack fixes in those
files will not be applied. The installer is keying on the date stamp on
the files. My guess (and only a wild guess at this time), is that one
of your files may have been touched. I will do some quick testing with
a stock virtual SBS server, to see if changing the dates on some of the
non-text files will cause it to fail. |

Regardless, we have SBSers with bog standard SBS boxes that can't get
it on the box and 'regular' server that can't. The transitioning
through SBS probably has nothing to do with this problem.

I'd call product support services... something is blocking this but it
has nothing to do with sBS

Might be worth running FileMon from www.sysinternals.com to see if
there are any missing files, access denieds, etc, when the patch tries
to run.
I use RegMon and FileMon a lot to troubleshoot app / package
installation probs.
Cheers,

I thought I'd check back and see if anyone has any more information on
this. I haven't had any time to try and use those tools myself. Has
this come up from others since I last posted? |

This morning I ran the FileMon and RegMon tools. I didn't see any
"Access Denied" messages. There were a number of Not Found messages
though. If someone is more skilled with the output of these two files,
would they mind taking a look? |
