MSCS DC Members and DNS |
|
|
Hi,
I would like to setup an MSCS cluster and have 2 nodes run as DCs (one as
primary the other as backup). Is it required that I have Microsoft DNS
Server running on these nodes as well? I would like to run a different DNS
server on them that supports dynamic updates. Is this possible?
Thanks

Agreed, please don't get me started on the dozen or so reasons why this is a
very bad idea (and unnecessary). Search this newsgroup for a few posts on
this subject.
Cheers,

I highly recommend against running server clustering on domain
controllers.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I heard other people also recommend against it. What's the reason behind it?
Thanks
D.

It really comes down to the High Availability mantra that I preach over and
over. AD is redundant in itself with multiple domain controllers. It doesn't
need to be clustered to be protected.
DCs, in the past, and I am also betting in the future, have been painful to
upgrade when they are on cluster nodes and they have hindered the upgrading
of clustered applications. In fact, as AD becomes more integrated into
applications (i.e. Exchange), running those applications directly on a DC is
becoming more and more of a problem. The Exchange example is a good one as
Microsoft will not support Exchange clusters where the nodes are DCs.

For starters, a properly deployed AD infrastructure has sufficient
redundancy. AD uses a multi-master model and clustering DCs is simply
redundantly redundant in that context (at a minimum). Listen to Russ and
Rod - they know from whence they speak. :)

Cluster provided no high availability for any AD services.
