I have one and only one workstation (Windows XP SP2) that is not connecting
to the closest site for one particular link in a domain based Windows 2000
DFS share. All of the other links are connected to the closest site and there
is no other workstation that has this same problem. All of the sites and
subnets are correctly defined in AD. I’ve installed the support tolls on the
client and ran Dfsutil.exe /pktflush but the problem persists. The
workstation has been connecting correctly for months and then recently this
problem has become persistent. Does anyone have an idea on how to
troubleshoot?

I had this same problem. I just gave the user logged local admin right
temporarily and changed the referral on the link. Right the folder, select
properties. Select the DFS Tab. Click the clear history button. Select the
referral you want from the list and click set active.

These option only work if the user had admin privilleges. The setting are by
user.

Remove the user temporary admin rights and you should be good to go.
