One user loses internet connection |

Hello Everyone:
Well, not one user, but one computer. And it deteriorates. This may get a
bit long, so please bear with me.
BTW, when the subject computer could not access the internet, others in the
office could. And the computer works on the LAN like a champ. Both of the
mapped drives connect, the Best MAS90 client installed, and runs fine. And
Word and Excel use the data folder on the server as they should.
Two days ago we introduced a new computer for the company president. Same
user name, but different computer name, as the old one was still running to
forward his mail to his blackberry. Joined the computer to the domain and
installed firewall client manually. Did not run any setup disks.
Intel motherboard, Intel processor 3.2. 512MB RAM, 80GB SATA hard drive, on
board LAN. All Intel drivers updated, bios flashed. Windows XP Pro, SP2,
all web updates.
After he returned yesterday, after about a half a day he complained that he
could no longer browse the internet. Today I went on site to trouble shoot.
The results are:
Early on the administrator could browse the inet, but the user could not.
As the day progressed neither the administrator nor the user could access
the inet.
Removed and reinstalled the firewall client. Seemed to help for a few
minutes. It updates instantly. But soon the symptoms returned.
Changed the name of the computer. Nothing. Ping the server by name, by ip
address. Instantly.
Turned off the original computer, the one running his blackberry redirector.
Connected the new computer directly to the DSL modem, keyed in the static IP
address, disabled the firewall client and unchecked use proxy server.
Seemed to work fine, but I did not leave it that way for very long.
Connected back through the server, changed back to firewall and proxy.
Worked, but after a few minutes the system would no longer connect to the
internet.
Changed to a static ip. All was well for a few minutes. Seemed very quick,
very positive. I left the site - drove to my next appointment. As I pulled
into the parking lot the client called to say that he could no longer
connect to the internet, and that the others in the office are fine.
Server:
192.168.16.2
255.255.255.0
none
4.2.2.1
4.2.2.2
Workstation:
192.168.16.185
255.255.255.0
none
192.168.16.2
One thing I noticed about the server. I cannot ping www.yahoo.com from the
console.
The workstation non browsing symptom is weird. The browser just sits there.
No errors, no dns errors, nothing in the event logs of the server or the
workstation. No strange pages. Clicking on a favorite produces nothing.
Most of the time the msn home page will come up, from the ISA cache I
assume. Sometimes (not often) it only produces a blue background.
All ideas and thoughts are welcome. I have googled, eventid, Microsoft
searched, but am not very imaginative when it comes to key word searches.

Hi Marina:
Of course you are correct. I was doing the ip and dns from memory and got
it wrong.
There are two nics in the server, and the LAN side is the 192 range. The
"external" nic is a static as assigned by the ISP. Can't rember the
numbers, but the ICW was run twice today to try to refresh any damaged
settings. That must all be OK, as all the other clients can browse the
internet.
When I get back on site I will get the settings from IP config /all and post
them. Both the server and the client.

Hi Anna,
DNS on the server should only point to the server IP. The DNS numbers of
your ISP should be put in the tab Forwarders of your DNS server.
