WSS Install / IIS |
|
|
Hello everyone.
Before I ask my question, you need to know that I don't know much about IIS
and just starting to work with WSS.
I want to replace my current intranet product with WSS, but I have a
question in regards to the installation. The server that I'm going to install
WSS is already hosting my current intranet (not wss) and in IIS it is setup
as the Default Website. If I leave my current intranet alone and just go
install WSS, will it install it under the Default Website in IIS? If it does,
is there a way for it not too? Once I have WSS up and running I would like to
just delete the old intranet from IIS by clicking on delete.
Thanks in adavance!

Hi Mike,
WSS will take over, monopolize, and otherwise rule your default web
site. It uses an ISAPI filter to intercept all web calls before they hit
the site to figure out if the request is for SharePoint or something
else.
What you can do to preserve your existing (non-WSS) site is to create
another site for it to live on and then install WSS. You can either give
it a website on a different port or use host headers to differentiate
between the two.
I would do all of this in a sandbox first so you see the effect and what
you need to do in your particular environment.

Mike,
To prevent WSS setup from taking over your Default Web Site, you can select
Server Farm option during the installation. In this case the installer will
only create the SP Central Administration site for you. After the
installation is completed, you are automatically taken to it and can create
the configuration database and extend IIS virtual servers with WSS. You will
need another web site in IIS to make it WSS-enabled.
Note that this scenario requires an external SQL server as the setup won't
install WMSDE.

Re: WSS Install / IIS |

I have seen this solution referenced many times but no explanation on how to
do it. I do not get a choice of selecting the site I want to install wss to.
I automaticaly selects the default site. I have a second site set up with
host header to use for sharepoint but can't figure out how to keep my other
sites working and installit only to the other site. What am I missing here?
thanks,
John
