DHCP! |

Hello all,,
I have been doing something really stupid and I would like to correct th
issue. I have recieved IP addresses from my ISP provider 64.XX.XX.XX. I
addressed my Server (Small business server 2000) with one of these and
created a scope in my DHCP Server with the rest of them. Each client logs in
obtains an IP and everyone is happy right, wrong. Of course everyone in the
world can ping each of my clients. stupid I know. Anyway in the DHCP I also
have a default scope 10.0.0.1 private addresses. Ok so when I de-activate my
64.XX.XX.XX scope and attempt to have the clients log in and use the private
addresses, (after an IPconfig/release) nothing happens no connection with the
DHCP. Why is this? Do I have to assign the server with a private address,
then point it to my router using my ISP IP?? Somewhat lost here as you can
tell. Any help is very very appreciated...
Thanks ed |

Hopefully you have two nics in your server
One should be connected to a switch with all workstations and SBS should be assigned a static IP with a private address which matches the scope of private addresses in DHCP on the SBS Server
The second can be configured with a public IP and connected directly to the internet device (DSL or cable modem)
OR
The second nic can be be configured with a private IP in a DIFFERENT subnet from the first and connected to a router which would have the public IP on the WAN port
This should clear it up

You need to get your network configured properly.
Two Nics, a static IP address, ISA, router
http://www.smallbizserver.net/Default.aspx?tabid=154
I assume you have 2 network adapters (NIC) in your server so that you can
run ISA in firewall mode. If not, toss another NIC in the server and follow
the diagrams/instrcutions in the link above. Your router should be set to
to use the 64.x.x.x address as a WAN IP address. Once you get this set up,
run antispyware and antivirus on all workstations and server. Depending on
how you've had your router setup, your entire network may have been
compromised by now.
