Migrating Home Dir from Nas to SAN clustering |
|
|
My Org is getting ready to move our Users Home Directorys and Folder
Rediredted directories from a failing Windows 2000 NAS appliance to a Windows
2003 Clustered enviroment (SAN Attached). We already have 400 gig of data in
shares. We would like to minimize down time. Without modifing all the users
profile paths to the new server name or completely shutting the nas to name
the new virtual server the same what is our best update path. We thought
about DNS Alias but was unsure how to fake out WINS nt 4. |

I know the Microsoft File Server Migration Toolkit does just that, just not
sure how or if it its cluster aware.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/upgrading/nt4/tooldocs/msfsc.mspx.
The tool is amusing though.
Cheers,

The tool kit does the faking of the name by creating a DFS name that can be
accessed by NT or newer clients. |

Agreed, but it also allows you to ping the old server name and get the
server, all over NetBT :) Some kind of WINS trick. It's all FM to me, with
the M being Magic, but dang its cool! Just have not taken the time to figure
out the behind the scenes stuff.
