Client Internet Connections |
|
|
Hi,
Set up new server. All connections to clients ok. Each client can
ping/resolve names between
each other and server. Server can connect to internet.
However, clients cannot connect to internet. Tried many permutations of
routing etc etc. What have
I not done
Any thoughts please. Thanks. |

Does nslookup resolve internet names on clients?
If the Server can resolve names on the internet and all clients are using
the server's IP for DNS, is the server using its own address for DNS?

Hi,
Yes you are correct, there is a clash with the adapter I use to connect to
the internet.
I confess I am a little confused. I know I have to keep it separate from the
server network
so to speak but every time I add the adapter and restart the computer the
adapter info
takes over the DCHP of the server. For this exercise I am using
192.168.0.10. It then changes
to 10.0.0.x.
I am not sure how I keep it separate.
Thanks.

Post an ipconfig /all from your client
Have you checked your local DNS server for a "." Forward Lookup Zone?
If it is there, delete it.
Do not use your ISP's DNS (or router) in any position on the server or
clients for DNS.

Most likely reason(s):
Clients are (correctly) using internal DNS server
on their NIC properties
Server is NOT, but rather (incorrectly) using the ISP
DNS Clients which is ALL INTERNAL machines including
the DNS server and DCs, must use STRICTLY the internal
DNS server (set).
The Internal DNS server set usually FORWARDS to the ISP.
Hers is my standard advice for AD DNS, but it applies to
pretty much any internal DNS setup....
DNS for AD
1) Dynamic for the zone supporting AD
2) All internal DNS clients NIC\IP properties must specify SOLELY
that internal, dynamic DNS server (set.)
3) DCs and even DNS servers are DNS clients too -- see #2
4) If you have more than one Domain, every DNS server must
be able to resolve ALL domain (either directly or indirectly)
Restart NetLogon on any DC if you change any of the above that
affects a DC and/or use:
nltest /dsregdns /server:DC-ServerNameGoesHere
Ensure that DNS zones/domains are fully replicated to all DNS
servers for that (internal) zone/domain.
Also useful may be running DCDiag on each DC, sending the
output to a text file, and searching for FAIL, ERROR, WARN.
Single Lable domain zone names are a problem Google:
[ "SINGLE LABEL" domain names DNS 2000 | 2003 microsoft: ]

Don't use the router for DNS on any client or server. Use the DCs address
for DNS only. You can use the router as a forwarder for the DNS service on
the DC.
If you can't keep the router from assigning its address for DNS, disable
DHCP on the router and configure DHCP on the server.
If your AD domain name is the same as your public domain name, you will have
to add the missing hosts such as www and mail to the internal DNS.
