WARNING: You only have 1 MX record |
|
|
I'm about as rookie as you can get with setting up DNS. I've got a few
domains going on a dedicated server. Everyting's working. Now I'm using
www.dnsstuff.com to clean up the details.
I have the following in the results: WARNING: You only have 1 MX record
What I gather is that I need to setup a backup email server. I presently
have a Host(A) record for mail.mydomain.com pointing to IP: 222.222.22.71
and an MX record for mail.mydomain.com.
Do I need another Host(A) record for another IP address? Like 222.222.22.72
....?
Then what kind of MX record do I setup? Or do I need another?
thanks |

IF you have that server acting as the backup email
server then it should have an MX record AND in
general it should be set to a higher (numbered) cost.*
(The 'priority' terminology is confusing so just make
the NUMBER BIGGER.)

Re: WARNING: You only have 1 MX record |

I appreciate your attention! I'm still a bit lost and that usually means I
did not ask the right questions. I'll try again.
When I originally setup the server I purchased 8 IP addresses.
I dedicated one of those IP addresses 222.222.22.71 to act as a mail server.
Having gotten the below WARNING and assuming I want to get rid of that
warning, my only option is to dedicate another IP address like 222.222.22.72
to act as another email server. Is that statement correct?
thanks

Re: WARNING: You only have 1 MX record |

Shank, forget that warning.
It is simply like I warning people having only 1 car,
"Warning you have only 1 Car registered".
You wont register another unless you have it.
So the warning actually will mean 'Have 2 Cars'
if one is down you can use the other.
The warning from DNS Stuff is SIMPLY as above car example.
You can ofcourse make your single mail server to listen to 2 IP
addresses and another MX record.
But you have only 1 mail server and if it is down the another MX
recrod is not going to help at all. And dnstuff SURELY does not
mean this.

So you only have one SMTP server and you will
benefit not a bit by (artificially) claiming to have
another one.
The warning is strictly for those people who have
a SECOND server and therefore should have the
correct records for it.

As Sharad says (in another post), ignore that warning
unless you can afford or arrange a second SMTP server
to handle your server down times.
