"The list cannot be displayed in Datasheet view" - why? |

New to Sharepoint - When I try to view lists on my SharePoint 2003 based web
site in Datasheet format I get this error:
"The list cannot be displayed in Datasheet view for one or more of the
following reasons:
-A datasheet component compatible with Windows SharePoint Services is not
installed
-Your Web browser does not support ActiveX controls
-Support for ActiveX controls is disabled."
We are using IE 6.0. We have tried installing Office 2003 on the server (I
have that on my client machine) but get the same error.
What might be causing this? What is the datasheet component? We installed
Sharepoint based on instructions in an O'Reilly book, which usually are
pretty accurate.
