DNS stops Forwarding |
|
|
We've got a W2K3 DNS server that all of the sudden stops forwarding DNS
Queries to our outside DNS Server. If I stop and restart the DNS Server
Service it takes off no problem. Has anyone seen this before? |

I've seen it where a DNS server has two interfaces, and one of them is
connected to an ADSL modem and the modem falls asleep due to inactivity. If
this is the case, we install a cable/dsl router and set it to not drop the
connection.
Or maybe depends on what service pack is on this Windows 2003 DNS server.
See if one of these links help.

Otherwise, not sure...

Thanks for the reply. This is happening on our W2K3 server no service pack.
All off the sudden we started adding more users to it but nothing else has
changed. It's on our LAN and there's no DSL connected to it.
Good info I'll check out the Q Articles.

Cool. I think since you don't have an SP on it yet, the article will help
you for the hotfix, or update it to SP1.

Ace,
This didn't work. We've applied SP1 and all of the latest hotfixes. We're
having the same problem still. Any other thoughts?
Thanks,
Jobe

Sorry to hear. THe only thing I can think os is what I originally thought
about the interface falling asleep, which this article will explain:
175436 - Microsoft NT4 DNS Stops Forwarding Queries After PPP Link Goes Down
{maybe applies to W2k &W2k3 too]:

Thanks Ace,
I'm going to open a ticket with MS. We aren't on a PPP Link and it's only
our primary DNS that this is happening to. I'll post what I find.
Thanks,
Jobe

Ok, I am curious what the problem is. I would probably run a netmon as well
to find out what is being queired at the time it fails.
