Hello!
Background: I am a teacher50% and systemadministrator 50% at
Palmcrantzskolan in Ostersund SWEDEN.
I have 6 terminal servers in a Novell network 5.x. Two
of these servers win2k3 I have installed network load balansing on.
I have Unicast with 1 nic on each server. The Cluster is named PZWTS-X3
IP:172.x.x.113 and the hosts PZWTS-X3A IP:172.x.x.114 and
PZWTS-X3B IP:172.x.x.115. First I connectet the hosts to a manageable
3Comswitch 3300 now I have connected them to a not manageable 3Comswitch
witch is connected to the 3300 switch with a little better result. The
ownwer of the City net accuse us for a lot of unnecessary traffic
on the net(fiber). They said they saw the heartbeat from the two servers
outside our shool
and that is wrong. They said that they should not see that traffic(heartbeat)
outside our school.
Q1 If I use the second NIC shall I then have 5 IP numbers? I have to
add 172.x.x.116 and 172.x.x.117 to the new NIC:s
How Shall I connect the new Cards 1) Crosslinked cable
2) to the big switch(3300) 3) to the small switch ?

Q2 Can I use two NIC:s(3 IP #) an chance from the small switch to
a Hub and do something in the registry (change some key).

Q3) Change to Multicast?

Q4 Is it impossible we have to live with that extra traffic?

Use the second nic and a cross over. Then use a private address such as
10.x.x.x or 192.168.x.x. You shouldn't use a public routable address for the
heartbeat.

Hope it helps

A second NIC is a wonderful idea and a best practice. Option 1 is not a bad
idea.

Do you mean 2 NICs per machine or total? Hubs will mostly help for the
inbound traffic.

Quote:

Q3) Change to Multicast?

With two NIC's, you will use Unicast.

Quote:

Q4 Is it impossible we have to live with that extra traffic?

Yes, and the heartbeat traffic should not be more then .50 percent of your
overall traffic. Ask them to filter it out :)

Thanks!
New problems. Server 2 sends 1302 bytes but receives many bytes. Server 1
sends many bytes byt recieves 0 bytes. I have changed media from 100 Mbits
FullDuplex -> 100Mbits Half Duplex -> 10Mbit half Duplex on both machines.
Byt the result is the same. I followed the Heartbeat configuration published
under Q258750

The problem is with the cards with crosslinked cables. These cards is not
connected to a switch. I want the HeartBeat to go through this cable. Is it
possible to check that it works?
