NT to 2K3 migration |
|
|
Would like to ask your opinion as to the best route that we should undergo to
perform an upgrade.
Here is our current setup:
1 NT SP6a PDC (where all user files are stored)
1 NT SP6a BDC with Exchange 5.5
1 NT SP6a BDC (file/back up server)
We purchased three new servers to replace the existing ones along with
Exchange 2K3. All servers do not have any OS installed on it, and thus we
will be starting from scratch. What is the best way in order for the
migration to take place. Thanks in advance for your help. |

Hello,
Thank you for using newsgroup!
For your situation, I would like to provide some my points for your
reference:
1. You may install Windows NT SP6a on the three new servers.
2. Upgrade the one server to PDC and two others to BDC. The old NT SP6a PDC
will downgrade to BDC.
3. Upgrade the new PDC to Windows Server 2003.
4. Migrate all user files are stored from the old NT SP6a PDC to the new
Windows Server 2003 PDC.
For more information, you may refer to this article:

it/b170bdc5-ba55-4184-8a8f-acb7705ff04a.mspx>
5. On the second new server, you may upgrade to Windows Server 2003 and
install Exchange 2003. And then you may migrate from your existing Exchange
5.5 to Exchange 2003. For more information, you may refer to:

6. You may migrate from the old file server to Windows Server 2003 file
server.

Thanks for your help. I just have a followup question and I would appreciate
your response as well.
The new servers that we have is not supported by NT. I ran the
checkupgradeonly from the i386\winnt32 folder and my current server does
support 2K3.
Would it be possible to upgrade the PDC to 2K3 and then introduce the other
servers to the system afterwards? What is the best course to take when faced
with this situation?
I would appreciate any response regarding this matter.
Thanks once again.

RE: NT to 2K3 migration |

Hi,
Ken is out of office today and I will work with at this problem.
Since the new box didn't support Windows NT, we may have following path to
upgrade to Windows 2003.
1. We must find a box A support both Windows NT and Windows 2003.
2. Install Windows NT on the box A and apply all Updates.
3. Add it into domain and promote it to PDC.
4. Upgrade it to Windows 2003.
5. Add the new box with Windows 2003 into domain and promote to DC.
6. Now you may either demote the the box A or remain it in the domain.
Let me know if you still have question about this. Since our newsgroup is
issue based support, please open a new post you have a new issue. Thanks
for understanding.
Best regards,
Vincent Xu
