Reading Trace Files |
|
|
I am having trouble with a few print sessions not printing correctly. The
problem is that they are printing start messages at the beginning and end
messages at the ending, and are not wrapping properly. My mainframe team
insists that this is an HIS issue, but I do not believe it to be the case
because I have 146 other printers working just fine. I have run traces on
both the SNA Server Service and the SNA Print Service. In the 3270
Messages trace I see the erronious text (pasted below), but because I am
unsure how exactly to read a trace I do not know if the data is inbound or
outbound. The data as you can see is <\\START\\\\\\STAR> ETC.

Re: Reading Trace Files |

Curtis,
What is different about these printers compared to the ones that do work? Do
prints that print incorrectly, print correctly on other printers?
Are the bad printers different models/drivers to the working ones? Are the
definitions different? (Using different PDT's for example)?
If it's a question of drivers, then can you redefine them with a driver/model
that does work, by choosing a printer type in the same family/product that does
work? I've had to do this before with Lexmark's where the exact driver for a
new model XXXX wouldn't work, but if I instead defined it as a lower-spec/older
model then it worked fine. (Can't remember the model numbers off the top of my
head, but the symptoms sounded similar to what you're seeing).
If it is this, then it's easiest to find a driver that does work, as it's more
likely a driver issue than a HIS issue. In fact I regularly use a bog standard
HP LaserJet 4 driver for most printers - even non-HP ones. Seems to work
best...
If the above doesn't help then you're likely going to need to raise a case with
MS PSS and get them a full set of traces, including the internal messages.

Re: Reading Trace Files |

Curtis,
I suspect that in your case, the host is sending the data, thus why it is being printed. It would help to see the actual nodemsg trace showing both DLC and FMI data flows as I put below. Question: is this a print screen?
Here is a better "trace" using SNAServer DLC and 3270 messages. (note: the below contains both SBCS and DBCS data, but it was the test script I'm currently working with <G>).

In the above, data is flowing from the link service (09160000) to the Node <sna server service> (01020101). When looking at a nodemsg trace, the node is always 01xxxxxx. The link could be any number, (09xxxxx, 06xxxxx, etc), but once established, it will always be the same value.
Next, you would see this for the FMI trace:

This shows the snaprint service (08120200) receiving data from the node (04020302). Note that the node does not use 01xxxxxx format in print service traces, but the print service ID matches what is in the nodemsg file.
As for print drivers, as Neil stated, I always recommend using a "known good" print driver such as the HP LaserJet4 for PCL printers. For dot matrix, you almost have to use the "Generic Text" print driver.
I've yet to have seen a mainframe job (well, only one) that required a OEM print driver for any additional functionality beyond normal PCL functionality that is already in the HPLJ4 driver that ships with the OS, and you can avoid a WHOLE lot of problems by using it for your HIS print sessions.
In the one case where the customer used the OEM driver, their print job datastream had a HardDrive that had watermarks stored on it. Depending on what they were printing, the mainframe print job would insert printer specific macro's to pull the watermark and insert it into the datastream. Chances are it would have worked with the HPLJ4 driver, since this was apparently standard PCL codes to begin with.
