Hi,

We have a major problem with the processes dfssvc.exe and lsass.exe on our
Windows 2003 Sp1 + patches using excessive CPU. The CPU usage on our Dual
Xeon server rises to 80% and causes slower than usual logins and slower
access to file share.

We have tried numerous things so far including virus scanning, restoring
system state to fix this problem but to date nothing has fixed the problem
and currently we have some very unhappy end users and two very frustated
network administrators.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Craig

Is this the PDCe? Is this constant, or is it being hammered on a periodic
basis?

How many other DCs do you have? How many users? What size DFS do you have?

Hi,

Thanks for the help but I have workaround for the problem.

The problem has been tracked to Patch 11 for Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise 8
on all clients.

Whenever a clients accessed a network share it would cause a cpu spike on
the server in the above processes. Multiply this by a few 100 clients and we
were seeing 70% and higher cpu on a server that never normally went over
10%.

If you replace the file naiavf5x.sys from Patch 10 and reboot the cpu usage
spike on the server does not occur.

I believe Mcafee are aware of the problem but when they will release the
patch is unknown as it is not happening in all cases.
