I have a 2003 box in a test lab environment. I have just installed 2003 and
have performed my DCPROMO. During that process I selected to install a DNS
server on that machine as well. Upon completion of the process, I try to
browse the internet without success. I can resolve local ip addresses, but
am completely unsuccessfull at resolving anything outside my domain. I went
to verify my IP properties on my NIC. I have tried either explicitly
changing my DNS entry to the actual IP address of my server NIC as well as
deleting all entries and allowing Windows to automatically configure my local
ip address as the DNS server. Either way, it doesnt work. I havent had this
problem on any other beginning test or production domains. Am I forgetting
something? I also verified that my root hints exist as well as the sites,
mcdcs, tcp, udp entries within dns. Please let me know what I am doing
wrong. thanks.

what does nslookup give you?

Does your DNS server think it's a root server, does it have a '.' zone ?

Is there a "." Forward Lookup Zone?
Delete it, if there is.

There is no "." domain.

do my dcpromo. What should my next move be?

Is this nslookup message what you are basing your idea that DNS is not
resolving?
This is a daft error nslookup gives when there is no Reverse lookup zone or
PTR for the IP of the DNS server. Ignore it or create a reverse lookup zone
and PTR or use a different tool such as Dig or Netdig that does not perform
a reverse lookup at start up or during a query.

No, I cant resolve any Internet addresses. I was simply giving all of the
data on my current scenario that I thought might be pertinent.

Did you check for the "." Forward Lookup Zone?
If it has one, delete it. That enables Root Hints and allows you to enable a
Forwarder (Optional).
