FInal DNS question before I take the Plunge |
|
|
My PDC is running Nt4.0, and is inline for an inplace upgrade.
I already have "W2k3" DNS running on another Server running W2k3.
can I use this already established DNS server for my AD, or should I put AD
on the upgraded NT4.0 server then forward "DNS" lookups to the established
unit.
Does AD require that DNS be on the domain controller?
Or is it just neater.
Are there any negative remifications of ...
1 - Putting DNS on the NEW/Upgraded Server
2 - Pointing all of the users, etc.. to the NEW DNS server
3 - Scrapping the old current DNS server, and let the DNS records rebuild on
their own.
We are only talking about a 30 user network
It seems to me that running 2 DNS servers would be just asking for trouble.
But which one should I keep?
Thanks in advance |

Hello,
Good to hear from you.
According to your message, your main concern is the DNS configuration when
you perform the in place upgrade from NT to win2k3 domain. Is it correct?
I recommend that you install DNS on the upgraded server and thus have an
AD-integrated DNS zone. In this way, you can enjoy the benefits such as
increased fault tolerance and security.
Regarding your questions, they are answered as the following:
Q1.Can I use this already established DNS server for my AD, or should I put
AD on the upgraded NT4.0 server then forward "DNS" lookups to the
established unit.
A: It is recommended to install AD-integrated DNS on the upgraded server.
However you can use the existing DNS server, and make some configuration on
the DC as to point to the DNS server.
Q2.Does AD require that DNS be on the domain controller? Or is it just
neater.
A: No, AD does not make the specific requirement. If you want to have an
AD-integrated zone, you have to install DNS on DC.
Q3.Are there any negative remifications of ...
1 - Putting DNS on the NEW/Upgraded Server
A: According to my experience, there are no negative reports. However, if
you want to promote another computer which has a clear install of win2k3 to
be DC, it is suggested to put the DNS on that clear installed DC.
2 - Pointing all of the users, etc.. to the NEW DNS server
A: It is all right to configure the clients to point to the DNS server.
3 - Scrapping the old current DNS server, and let the DNS records rebuild
on their own. We are only talking about a 30 user network
A: I suggest that you scrap the current DNS server. You can configure the
DNS dynamic update functionality in Windows Server 2003 according to the
following article.
How To Configure DNS Dynamic Update in Windows 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;816592
Q4.It seems to me that running 2 DNS servers would be just asking for
trouble. But which one should I keep?
A: As you have only 30 users, there is no need to have 2 DNS servers. I
suggest that you keep the AD-integrated one. Please refer to the article
below to have more information.
Pay more attention to the part of "DNS Configuration" in the following
article.

Hope this helps. If you have any further questions don't hesitate to get in
touch!
