MOM for *nix servers? |
|
|
Hi.
I can't check this out for myself so I need to poke around here for
some answers.
What can MOM do for Linux/Unix servers?
I guess I should be able to monitor basic functionality as
mail/web/ping but for more specific purposes as MySQL, disk-space, CPU
load and so on - is there anyone here using MOM for this?
My client has Nagios today and since we're going to implement a large
number of Windows servers (15+) with various critical services I would
prefer if we used MOM to monitor these.
My client would prefer not to have two systems, of course, and already
know Nagios so I need to convince them that MOM can do for *nix what
Nagios does today.
TIA.

Well,
We have succesfully implemented Syslog and SNMP.
One remark is that SNMP takes some time to figure out, syslog is a lot
easier to implement.

Hi there is a third party add in Vintela sell which allows full monitoring
http://www.vintela.com/products/vsm/product_details.php
To configure MOM to monitor and collect syslog messages from UNIX-based
computers, first configure MOM to process the syslog messages, and then
configure the UNIX-based computers to forward the syslog messages to a
computer where a MOM agent has been installed. The agent can then create
events for these messages.
The following steps summarize the procedure for configuring MOM and the
applicable UNIX-based computers: 1. Configure MOM to process syslog
messages:a. Create a syslog provider.
b. Create a Computer Group for the computers that are to receive syslog
messages.
c. Create a Processing Rule Group and the necessary processing rules to
process the syslog messages.
2. Configure each UNIX-based computer to forward syslog messages to a
computer that is in the syslog Computer Group.
For more detailed information about configuring MOM to collect UNIX syslog
information, refer to pages 77 to 79 in the MOM Installation Guide.

Thanks - this should be enough to get me up and running.

We are using MOM, and in the near future i will be implementing a couple of
virtual agents from www.Excsoftware.com -- they have redhat and freebsd
managementpacks and on their website they have a loooong list - go ahead,
hopefully you will find what you need.
