SBS2K shared fax functioning |

The reliability of the SBS2K fax server is starting to reach a point in
which I want to replace it with a good fax server solution.
From the start we have had problems with faxes not being send because of
error "no dial tone" after three retries. In some cases resending the fax
will solve the issue. In some receiver's/sender's cases we are not able to
send or receive form them tru the fax server and have to fall back on the
fax machine.
Is there a KB document on how to solve these issues? Update/Fix?
Or would upgrading to another fax server solution be a better solution.

Hello,
I am one of the few people who love the fax service (not really, but it
feels that way !).
I have heaps of sbs 2000 and now 2003 servers out there running a modem
as the only fax send and receive solution and it works well.
the only issue I have is with v92 modems or non HCL modems.
If I use v90 modems (not v92 with v90 fallback, real v90 only) and it
all works well. I have tried v92 with flash updates, special init
strings and the like. they still do not perform as well ast the V90
modems.
If attaching to a additional serial port, I only use Digicards or
Stallion cards. The other multi serial cards seem to not work correctly
and are cheap. I also stay away from USB modems. I use external, real
hardware modems. At the moment I use Netcomm webmaster modems and they
work extremely well.
What brand of modem and how is it attached for you ?

Hello Michael,
I love what works.
The modem used is a US Robotics Sportster 56k external V.90 x2 Fax. I have
to check the driver and firm ware. I read that the 5.0 firmware is
unreliable "The Speed Limit Commands (&U&N) do not work reliably with the
5.0.0 firmware version; The Call Progress Responses (ie, Busy, No Dial Tone)
do not work properly with 5.0.0 firmware." The modem is connected to the
COM1 port. No additional comports. The modem is used for sending and
receiving of faxes only.
I have other older modems in the office laying around. With what brand/type
do you have the best results?

netcom roadster v90 serial.
If you have a 33.6 modem laying around, give it a try. It will help
isolate the issue
