Moveuser vs. ADMT Computer Wizard? |
|
|
Re: NT4 SP6a to WS2003 domain migration
In trying to migrate LOCAL PROFILES, I've been having all sorts of problems
getting ADMT Computer Migration Wizard's agent to work.
(I usually get "access denied" errors when it tries to dispatch the agent, and
I've been spending way too much time trying to figure out what's causing that,
and trying various tricks recommended in these forums.)
In my current case, I have only a handful of machines that need to be migrated
and they're all pretty available to me, so now I'm thinking it would be quicker
to just forget ADMT and visit those clients and do the migration directly on
them.
Would MOVEUSER.EXE be the best way to do this?
Other than having to be run manually on each client is there anything that
MOVEUSER does not do, or does differently, compared to ADMT Computer Migration
agent?
Or is there any other method/tool that would be better than MOVEUSER?
Any other/advice is much appreciated.
Thanks.

I found on my Access Denied errors that the user account logged into the
server doing the migration (a local or domain admin) has to have
administrative privileges on the target machine.

Thanks, I also had to do that, but for some reason it does not consistently
allow me to (re)run the computer migration without getting "access denied". So
I'm now spending more time testing MOVEUSER.

Re: Moveuser vs. ADMT Computer Wizard? |

I've just done some experimenting with MOVEUSER and it seems to work. It seems
similar to the ADMT wizard in that it really doesn't copy the local profile as
much as modify the existing one and leaving the original profile folder intact
with the same name.
So that's my main gripe at the moment. If I do "moveuser dom1\user dom2\user"
the underlying profile folder will not be renamed and will continue to be
"user.dom1" eventhough that profile is really for dom2! That I find to be VERY
confusing and dangerous (i.e. some well-intended person deleting what they think
is a dead "dom1" profile)
Obviously renaming profile folders in Explorer is a bad idea... things only get
worse. I wonder is there some tool that allows you to rename the underlying
folder and still retain 100% linkage to the profile that Windows manages?
I'm skeptical that the GUI tool (My Comp, Props, Adv, User Profiles, Copy To)
would be of reliable help. I was wondering if there is some other way to do
this... command/tool? regedit??

Hi Rich,
I noticed that you submitted the same problem in partner newsgroup
<microsoft.private.directaccess.win2003.setup-deployment>.
Let's focus on that thread as the partner newsgroups are more qualified for
you to be severed by the Professionals from Microsoft. In the meantime, we
welcome peers here sharing their great experience to help you with this
issue.
Thanks and have a great day!

Yes I sometimes post in both partners & public newsgroups. And yes, I look for
peer feedback from the public newsgroups, rather than the "official" answers I
expect in the partner newsgroups.
