I am planning to restore our 2nd DC because I have to re-install Win 2003
server OS due to disk problem. Should I dcpromo and demote this DC before
recreating? And will I have any problems if I use the same IP address and
computer name? Thanks.

Hi David,

Q1: Yes, you need to first run dcpromo to demote this DC to remove it from
AD before reinstallation. However, before demotion, please make sure this
DC is not take the FSMO role in the domain. If yes, please refer to the
following article to first transfer FSMO roles (also known as <operations
master> roles) by using the Active Directory snap-in tools in MMC.

Q2: No, there are not problems if you use the same IP address and computer
name for the relevant information has been removed from AD when demoting
this DC.

Hope it helps.

Ada Pan
