We have a strange computer policy somewhere that is causing havoc with a DFS
root connection. WHen the computer policy is enabled...and the person tries
to goto for instance \\mydomain.com\data it takes a LONG time and then they
get a authentication request screen.

However, if I disable the computer policy, they get right to it...any
suggestions on how to track down the specific setting?

Firstly run RSoP on a client and see what settings are in effect. It sounds
like you have DNS problems. If this is only happening when the GPO is on it
might be because of a rogue DNS server setting in the new DNS admin
templates.
