Server 2003 DDNS - Legal Entry? |
|
|
Is the following a legal entry for Server 2003 DDNS? (AD Integrated).
* Alias (CNAME) www.mycompany.com.
It seems to be in-line with the RFC, but then again another portion of the
RFC states that characters such as an asterik cannot be used.
If it is not legal, what are the ramifications?
Thank you! |

An asterisk in DNS is a Wildcard character.
I have tested this and you can create a wildcard CNAME record, but as with
other wildcard records there may be unexpected results. This is especially
if you place the wild card record in a zone for a domain that is in your DNS
suffix search list because this search list is appended to queries by the
system resolver and by nslookup and may cause any query to DNS to resolve to
this record.
On a side note, in MS DNS, to create a Wildcard "A" record, you must create
a subdomain named with an asterisk and create a blank "A" record in the
subdomain. MS DNS does not allow an asterisk in a host record name through
the MMC DNS console.
There may be situations to use a wildcard record and your may be one, just
understand what a wildcard record does and how it may affect you.
