Extending partition using Diskpart in Win2003 Ent |
|
|
I need to extend my existing data partition from 400GB to 500GB. Its HP
EVA3000 SAN and in 2 node Windows clusterd environment.
We have tried it using Diskpart utility on a similar environment but without
a cluster. We tried to extend from 400GB to 450GB.
After extending thru SAN the additional free space does appear at the end of
the partition but when I give the diskpart utility it goes into a hung state.
I waited for almost 10 hours & then killed the process. After this I noticed
that the space had increased thru Disk Managment but not thru windows
explorer. In explorer it was still showing the unextended size.
I am not sure if I am missing some step. We want to achive this without
losing data |

Have you read this
http://msmvps.com/clustering/archive/2005/07/17/57916.aspx yet?
What steps exactly did you try? Cause 10 hours is a very long time to be
down.

Hi Rodney,
Thanks a lot for the information.
I have a similar URL which I have been following
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;304736
only difference is that I don't have cluster in my contingency site where I
am doing the testing right now.
The steps I have been following are:
1) First extended the VDISK in HP EVA3000 SAN
2) Confirmed that the free space is available at the end of the existing
drive thru Disk Managment
3) There was already a unique name for the partition
4) Started Diskpart with List Volume & Select Volume commands.
Problem starts here: As soon as i type the Extend command, it goes into a
hung state & never comes out. I have tried this twice & both times it had
hung. I had to kill the process as I had left it running for almost 10 hours.
After abnormally killing the process, I noticed that Disk Managment was
showing the extended size but explorer was not showing the extended size.
So basically the Diskpart had failed to extend the partition.
I am not able to understand why the Extend command is hanging. We even tried
with Extend size=xxx command, but this also hangs

Rodney,
The server on which I am trying right now is not in cluster. Its a stanalone
server attached to EVA3000.
Actually I am trying a test on this contingency server so that I can use the
same procedure on our production server which is in cluster
Once I have successfully tested it on our contingency server then I can
apply it on production 2 node cluster server.

Sounds like diskpart blew up. You'll need to get the fsextend utility from
Microsoft to correct this.

Yes, occasionlly diskpart does not work properly. When this occurs, you can
use the fsextend utility to correct this. As far as I know, this utility is
only available from Microsoft PSS.
The other way to correct this would be to get a utility like diskprobe and
manually correct the partition table entries.

John,
Thanks a lot for the information.
Just found a article on Win2003 + Diskpart utility problem
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=841650
How safe is to run the Fsextend utility?. Are there any chances of loosing
data?
I am still not sure from where do I get the utility?
One more thing I have noticed is whenever I have killed the process of
Extend command, disk managament shows the expanded capacity however Windows
Explorer did not recognize the additional space. After this I could not even
format the partition nor delete as it was saying some process is still
running...not sure which?. I could only format the partition after rebooting
the server

Thanks Rod,
I have got many links with the similar problem I am facing & all of them say
that the problem was resolved after running the Fsextend command in Win2003.
I am not sure wether there is a seperate command for Win2003 as well?.
Can you please help me in identifying if there is a seperate Fsextend

Win2K

I have got many links with the similar problem I am facing & all of them
say
that the problem was resolved after running the Fsextend command in
Win2003.
I am not sure wether there is a seperate command for Win2003 as well?.
Can you please help me in identifying if there is a seperate Fsextend
command for Win2003 or it is the same command which I have been provided
for
Win2K

HI JOhn,
I have just received the Fsextend utility from Microsoft PSS. The txt
file
says it is only for Win2K. In our case we have Win2003 Ent edition.
Will
the
same utility work on Win2003 Ent as well?

Yes, occasionlly diskpart does not work properly. When this occurs,
you
can
use the fsextend utility to correct this. As far as I know, this
utility
is
only available from Microsoft PSS.
The other way to correct this would be to get a utility like
diskprobe
and
manually correct the partition table entries.

John

Hi John,
Thanks a lot for the information.
I am sorry but I am not able to get what you are trying to say.
Is there some problem/bug with the diskpart utility. Secondly how
do I
get
fsextend utility?. Is it similar to Extend command?

I need to extend my existing data partition from 400GB to
500GB.
Its
HP
EVA3000 SAN and in 2 node Windows clusterd environment.
We have tried it using Diskpart utility on a similar
environment
but
without
a cluster. We tried to extend from 400GB to 450GB.
After extending thru SAN the additional free space does appear
at
the
end
of
the partition but when I give the diskpart utility it goes into
a
hung
state.
I waited for almost 10 hours & then killed the process. After
this
I
noticed
that the space had increased thru Disk Managment but not thru
windows
explorer. In explorer it was still showing the unextended size.
I am not sure if I am missing some step. We want to achive this
without
losing data

Hi John,
Thank you very much for your help.
I will try running the Fsextend command of Win2000 on our Win2003 Ent server
in my contingency environment today
