Also - is it ness to run hotfix 324392 (Adprep.exe)

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324392

On one hand MS states that you should always use the latest version of
adprep.exe and further down the page it states only use it if there is a
problem in which case contact MS. So what is the recommended procedure and
where can you get the hotfix if you dont have W2K3 SP1?

regards

david

Hi David,

I don't think it is necessary to raise the domain function level if there
are no Windows NT 4.0 domains. However, it is recommended to raise the
domain function level because higher the level is, better the performance
is.

Also, it is not necessary to apply the hotfix of KB324392. You can first
run the Active Directory Preparation Tool with the original version and
then upgrade to Windows Server 2003 SP1 or first ask for the latest version
of the tool from CSS. However, we recommend you contact MS CSS to ask for
the latest version of Adprep.exe because of these enhancements listed in
the article. As to the "Hotfix information" section stating that "A
supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended
to correct the problem that is described in this article", it may be
related to the template used for the hotfixes which need to receive
additional testing.

Hope it helps.

Ada,

In a related question to upgrading W2K DC to W3K DC, I am referring to KB
325379. Would I be correct to assume that these instructions would supercede
KB 3243392 ?

Additionally, In regards to the KB 325379 article regarding an upgrade of a
W2K DC to a W2K3 DC, a command line that is referenced in the article,
Section 2, paragraph b :

repadmin /showattr s2
ncobj:domain:/filter:"(&(objectCategory=computer)(primaryGroupID=516))"
/subtree /atts
:operatingSystem,operatingSystemVersion,operatingSystemServicePack

returns the following error:

Repadmin can't locate a "home server" or determine our domain because of the
fol lowing error. Try specifying specific "home server" with /homeserver:[dns
name]Error: An error occured:Win32 Error 1212(0x4bc): The format of the
specified domain name is invalid.

If I modify the command to include the referenced switch, I receive this:

repadmin /showattr /homeserver:s2.test.local ncobj:domain:
/filter:"(&(objectCategory=computer)(primaryGroupID=516))" /subtree
/atts:operatingSystem, operatingSystemVersion,operatingSystemServicePack

Repadmin couldn't parse the DC_LIST (ncobj:domain:) provided. Try repadmin
/lis thelp

Has anyone dealt with this KB article and found the correct syntax of the
command line to have it produce the proper results? The /listhelp is not
very informative or specific enough for me to devise a solution.

TIA,

E. James

Ada,

Thank you for the most informative answer. It has really cleared the issue
up for me. About posting to new topics, your own posting board suggests that
you scour the existing posts and try to see if something matches your topic
not to duplicate posts. I thought that I was doing that, but I guess that I
was wrong. Maybe I should look to Novell for an answer to this question.

Sorry to inconvenience you with my query. I should have known better. Um,
it is $200+ some for a phone answer, correct ? And we should expect that to
be as straight forward as your answer? I am not flaming you - but I DID post
on topic and received a rather lame response.

Good thing that you kept your response quota up!! Good for you!!

Hi James,

I think you might misunderstand me.

1. This is pulic newsgroup, so feel free to submit your questions here.
The engineers from Microsoft, MVPs, and other experienced customers will
help you with the specific issues. I didn't suggest you call CSS.

2. The reasons we why ask you open a new thread:
1) It can keep the the thread clean, which will benifit other customers who
read the thread.
2) The network environment and issues you encounter are different from the
original one. We need more detailed information on your side.
