Migrate SBS2K to W2K3 |
|
|
Hello,
I have seen some posts about this, and want to clarify a process I have in
mind:
We have an SBS2K Premium server we want to change into a W2K3 Standard
server (not SBS). We are nearing the 75 limit of devices that SBS2K3 would
offer, so we just want to move straight to W2K3. We don't need SQL and the
Exchange database is small. It is almost twice the price to use the SBS
Premium Transition Pack. So, we want to purchase new retail copies and Open
Licenses of W2K3 and Exchange2K3.
Here's what I want to do:
A. Keep the user accounts (we don't care about the passwords)
B. Keep the computer accounts
C. Keep the existing domain name
D. Retain Exchange e-mail
Questions:
1. We have new server hardware. Can I set up W2K3 on the new hardware and
use the Active Directory Migration Wizard to copy the user and computer
accounts from SBS2K to W2K3? Will this would accomplish items A & B above? I
know that I cannot use the same domain name when using the migration wizard,
so does the ADMT work with an existing SBS2K server even though SBS does not
support trusts?
2. If the answer to item 1 is "yes", then after I am done with a successful
migration, can I change the domain back to the original domain name? This
would accomplish item C in the list above.
3. Before turning off the SBS2K server, I would use EXMERGE (I think) to
export all mail into PST files. Then, I would install Exchange on the new
W2K3 server and import those PST's into Exchange. This would accomplish item
D above.
I would appreciate some articles and advice on this.
Thanks,
David |

RE: Migrate SBS2K to W2K3 |

Hi David,
For Q1
=======
To migrate from SBS 2000 to Windows 2003 Domain, please refer to the steps
in the following article.
Migrating from Small Business Server 2000 or Windows 2000 Server to Windows
Small Business Server 2003
http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/d/c/6dccf9b4-d915-4c95-b5af-100b89e
02add/SBS_MigratingSBS2k.doc
Note:
1. There pre-requirements to complete this as new domain 2003 installation,
new mail system installation etc.
2. Some settings (like users passwords) wouldn't migrate and may need to
re-configure manually.
No trusts need to be formed. By opening the ADMT using the "runas" command,
you do not need to establish a trust. The "runas" command allows you to run
the ADMT in the context of a user on the SBS 2K server.
For Q2
=======
Please refer to the steps in the following article to perform Domain rename
action.
Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Domain Rename Tools
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/downloads/domainrename.mspx
Please note that the domain rename may not be successful at the first time.
If it failed, please separate it into two sections.
1. Migrate SBS 2000 to win2k3
2. Migrate Win2k3 to new win2k3 with the same name as SBS 2000 domain.
For Q3
=====
First of all, please take a look at the following article to get the
information about Mailbox Merge Program (Exmerge.exe).
174197 XADM: Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Merge Program (Exmerge.exe)
Information
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=174197
Then, I would suggest you use the method in the following Knowledge Base
(KB) articles to create a user account to run Exmerge.exe utility to import
and export the .pst data between Exchange 2000 and 2003.
292509 How to configure an account to use the ExMerge utility in Exchange
2000

823143 How to Configure the Administrator Account to Use Exmerge 2003 in
Exchange 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=823143
Note: For Exchange server 2003, you can download Exmerge utility from the
following link:

Hope it helps.
