We are currently in the process of migrating (not upgrading) to windows
server 2003 from an NT 4 environment. We do however have a few issues. We
have a large organisation and need to do a phase migration.

Let me give an example of what we need:

- Domain abc.nt.dom is a NT 4 domain on a NT DNS server
- Domain def.w2003.dom is a 2003 domain on a 2003 DNS server
- OS on Clients on the abc.nt.dom domain are 2000/XP
- we want to set the DNS server for the abc.nt.dom clients to the 2003 DNS
server and turn off WINS in the abc.nt.dom domain.

So the question is what steps are required to set up the 2003 DNS to be the
DNS server for all NT domains and the 2003 domain during the interim
migration. Please remember that we have a large organisation and we are doing
a phased migration. We want to be sure that DNS can provide all services
before we completely turn off WINS.

You may have to reconsider your plans of turning off WINS. Especially, if
your users use Network places and your shares are using NetBIOS names
instead of FQDN. As for using Win2k3 DNS for the NT4 domains, NT4 doesn't
store its domain records in DNS anyway so it isn't an issue to configure
Win2k3 to support the NT4 domains. Any zones on the NT can be transferred to
the Win2k3 without a problem.

do you have any steps that I may follow to configure the DNS on the 2003
server to support the NT4 zones?

Also, Exchange 2000 and 2003 requires WINS for certain functions.

An easy way is to create the zone on Win2003 DNS as a secondary zone,
specifying the NT4 DNS as the Master. Once the zone comes across, then
change it to a Primary zone (or AD Integrated if it;s on a domain
controller). Then change all the machines (clients, member servers,
including NT4 machines) to use this server as their DNS address. Do not use
any other DNs servers (such as your ISP's or any external DNS servers) other
than your internal server. This is important with AD.

Not sure how to create a secondary zone? Read below for the section about
secondary zones.
