We have recently added a 2003 domain controller to a windows 2000 domain. We
want to move the roaming profile that is on the 2000 domain controller to the
new 2003 domain controller.

Can we just make the change to the profile path for each user in active
directory ?

Thanks,

Ray

Hello Ray,

Yes, we can first copy all the user's profiles from the old server to the
share on the new server, and then edit the each user's property to point
the server to the correct path. You can also refer to the following
Microsoft Knowledge Base article to copy the roaming profile one by one:

142682 How to Create and Copy Roaming User Profiles in Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=142682

Step 1: Copy the user profile folder to the new server. You can use
Robotcopy command to do so.
Step 2:
--------
For each user account that you want to disable roaming profile, please do
the following:

1. Go to the client computer that the user works before, and login the user
account. This ensures that the cached profile is up-to-date. You can
examine the Documents and Settings folder in the computer's local disk and
make sure the cached user profile folder is there. Log-off the user
account.
2. Then go to your Windows 2000 domain controller, click "Start", point to
"Programs", point to "Administrative Tools", and then click "Active
Directory Users and Computers".
3. In the console tree, expand <"Domain">, and then click the folder where
users are located (typically the "Users" folder).
4. In the list of user names, click the user name. Right-click the user
name, and then click "Properties".
5. On the "Profile" tab, in the "Profile Path" box under "User Profile",
modify the profile path there.
6. Repeat steps 1 through 5 for each user account that you want to move.

Hope it helps.

Regards,

Ada Pan
