Hi,

After some serious replication trouble we've used dfs manager to remove replica's and recreated the links/replicas.

Replication has started again but I noticed some 'odd' things.

- The old replication sets are still there (although with a 'tombstoned=1' property in the registry)
- There are still files in the 'outlog' from the period when things went wrong. These must come from the database since I deleted the entire staging directories on both members before re-instating the new replica sets.

Is there a safe way to remove these old 'backlog' entries ? I was thinking to stop ntfrs on both members and renaming the 3 database files but I can't find _ANY_ info regarding nasty side-effects (which there probably are). I just don't want the darned thing to start replication all over again (>80Gb) since it _crawls_ and you can't seem to improve the replication speed.

Any hints/suggestions/thoughts/experience ?

Hi again,

I've tested the 'delete/rename' database in our testenvironment and it is not an option, replication starts from scratch when you do that.

Most of these 'old errors' seem to have gone by now, there's just one 'morphed directory' (that isn't) that keeps popping up in ultrasound and won't dissapear (3+ days now), anybody with suggestions for this ?

Yes, deleting the JDB will result in a full replication as that DB tracks
the current status of replication.

What is happening to the files in the outlog? Are they not going anywhere?

You might need to ring PSS on this as I don't know the answer and things are
quite quiet in here at the moment...

Well at the moment all is well (outlog's are 'clean' now) but we're looking into using 'availl wafs' instead of dfs/frs for replication. At least 'on paper' it looks a lot better in the file locking department than dfs/frs does with an 'active/active' setup & I'm not going to wait for 2003R2.

The outlog 'repaired' itself appearantly (since I did nothing). Directly after starting the 'initial replication' there was a big outlog on the 'receiving' member even with files it did not even have at that moment with 'FirstTryTimes that were 'in the past'. But somehow this problem fixed itself.

Glad to hear everything is now well.

I know what you mean - lots of great new features, but a bit of a wait, and
probably considerable costs due to the fact that R2 is going to require
additional licensing and rollout (which includes schema extensions, and lots
of new installations).
