Hello All,
I'm working on a CS project for a client.

We build the original catalog from a XLS file that contained their
product IDs, descriptions, prices, etc.

But now they need to do a bulk update/modification.

I know that I can do an XML export from the BisDesk for them to review
the catalog info.

Assuming that they're able to make the mods that they need.

Can I re-import this catalog to update the existing items?

Or, will the imported items be treated as "new" items in the catalog?

Is there a better strategy for doing the export/update/import of the
existing catalog?

Any help is appreciated!

You can do an incremental update
The CatalogManager object has a method named ImportXml which contains a
parameter fUpdateOnly.
Setting this to true will update exieting items in the catalog

Thanks for the information.
I've used the CatalogManager to export my catalog to an XML file.
But this file is not readable by Excel (probably since it is not in
the XML Spreadsheet format (?)).

I also tried linking to the file using MS Access, but it seems that I
can only import th file into MS Access. But the data is not imported
properly by MS Access. Most of the information is blank/null.

Can you recommed an application that will allow for editing/saving of
changes to the XML file generated by the catalog manager?

I only have a couple of hours in the budget for getting this done and
creating a quick and dirty editor will probably put me over my time
budet for this export/edit/import cycle.

I am not sure if this can be developed in a couple of hours.
Instead of exporting the file cant you do this
1. Perform a search on the catalog to get the records you want to edit
2. Bind the recordset to a datagrid
3. Use the catalog APIs to save the changes made by the user back to the
catalog database.

There are some very good tools for CS2002 at

that may help you with this. In the past I've used a simple BizTalk map to
transform from an Excel XML schema into the CS2002 catalog schema also.
