I am having a very strange problem happening here with a DC trying to upgrade
from 2000 to 2003.

When I try to run the Upgrade Advisor it starts then just stays on the
loading information file and doesnt go any further. The machine does not hang
just sits there thinking.

I am also having problems where I can not install or uninstall any software
on the box - the msi just sit there. Again the server is not hung.

Also when i run the Windows Update off the start button the IE session just
craps out.

Any suggestions?

THanks
Justin

Hi Justin,

First, I'd like to suggest you create a new user account with
Administrative privilege to see the efforts.

And for your symptom, I think eventlog can find some useful information.

I suggest you collect some system information using Microsoft Configuration
Capture Utility , then please send the CAB (Zip) file to me. I will try my
best to research it.

Please download the tool:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE

For more information and overview, please refer to link below:

KB818742 Overview of the Microsoft Configuration Capture Utility
(MPS_REPORTS)
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=818742

Note: The CAB file will be generated for your convenience in the
%systemroot%\MPSReports\Setup\Lite\Cab directory called
%COMPUTERNAME%_MPSReports_.CAB. The CAB file will contain the reports
generated by the MPS Reporting Tool. If the CAB file isn't produced, please
compress all of the result files under %systemroot%\MPSReport\Setup\Lite as
a Zip file. (Note: %systemroot% is the folder where you install Windows.)

Please send me the CAB file via the email : v-xuwen@microsoft.com

I'll try my best to research.

However, for your situation, I think you problem is huge and I strongly
recommend you contact CSS for assistance.

For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support (CSS) phone
numbers and information about support costs, please go to the following
address on the World Wide Web:

<http://support.microsoft.com/directory/overview.asp>

Thanks.

He might also run DCDiag -- were he actually trying to do the
upgrade that would be my first suggestion.

Given his other weird problems, my next though would be a
(backup then a) Repair Install of the current system, but I
would suggested perhaps waiting for you to review his
configuration since you have offered to do that.

I would do the repair install before spending money on a support
call, maybe even before using that method even with a Premier
Account.

Hi Herb,

Thank you for you suggestions.

I agree with you that if possible, the DCDiag log is appreciated.

Regarding contact the CSS, I think it is necessary. Maybe repair
installation can help but since the box is a DC, I think we will never too
careful.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Justin,

After research your MPS report, I found a lot of application fault in
DrWatson log. So I think your system may not stable enough. So I think
backup your system and data is necessary. And if possible, perform a repair
installation is helpful.

Will this work? I am running Windows 2000 server not XP?

What about an upgrade to 2003 by launching the setup from Safe Mode?

I am having a very strange problem happening here with a DC trying to
upgrade
from 2000 to 2003.

When I try to run the Upgrade Advisor it starts then just stays on
the
loading information file and doesnt go any further. The machine does
not
hang
just sits there thinking.

I am also having problems where I can not install or uninstall any
software
on the box - the msi just sit there. Again the server is not hung.

Also when i run the Windows Update off the start button the IE
session
just
craps out.

Any suggestions?

THanks
Justin

Hi Justin,

You definitely can perform an in-place upgrade upon Windows 2000 Server.
You may also refer to following article:

292175 How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=292175

You also may try to perform an upgrade to Windows 2003 under Safe Mode as
an work around.

Hope it helps

Will this work? I am running Windows 2000 server not XP?

What about an upgrade to 2003 by launching the setup from Safe Mode?

Hi Justin,

After research your MPS report, I found a lot of application fault in
DrWatson log. So I think your system may not stable enough. So I think
backup your system and data is necessary. And if possible, perform a
repair
installation is helpful.

For more detail about repair installation, please refer to link below:

Windows XP

Hi, Justin,

Thank you for sending me that.

Please call CSS simultaneously because as I said in my reply, it was

huge.

Anyway, I'll try my best to be of assistance.

Hi Justin,

First, I'd like to suggest you create a new user account with
Administrative privilege to see the efforts.

And for your symptom, I think eventlog can find some useful
information.

I suggest you collect some system information using Microsoft
Configuration
Capture Utility , then please send the CAB (Zip) file to me. I will
try
my
best to research it.

Please download the tool:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b
0b
d9
15706/MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE

For more information and overview, please refer to link below:

KB818742 Overview of the Microsoft Configuration Capture Utility
(MPS_REPORTS)
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=818742

Note: The CAB file will be generated for your convenience in the
%systemroot%\MPSReports\Setup\Lite\Cab directory called
%COMPUTERNAME%_MPSReports_.CAB. The CAB file will contain the
reports
generated by the MPS Reporting Tool. If the CAB file isn't
produced,
please
compress all of the result files under
%systemroot%\MPSReport\Setup\Lite
as
a Zip file. (Note: %systemroot% is the folder where you install
Windows.)

Please send me the CAB file via the email : v-xuwen@microsoft.com

I'll try my best to research.

However, for your situation, I think you problem is huge and I
strongly
recommend you contact CSS for assistance.

For a complete list of Microsoft Customer Service and Support (CSS)
phone
numbers and information about support costs, please go to the
following
address on the World Wide Web:

Thanks.
