What is the best configuration for a mobile XP laptop
when a user floats from a Domain environment to a Workgroup environment?
Referancing logon profiles to keep the desk top.

I also have a bit of confusion on mirroring profiles.
In an environment where people come and go and management wants profiles to
be person name,
How do I change a local logon profile but keep the same desktop and
application?

this may help. quoted from http://www.ChicagoTech.net
Q: How can I keep my domain profile when logging on home network

Thanks to cached credentials, you may have two options: 1) create the home
network's workgroup name as the same as the domain network at work and make
sure ever thing works, and then join the computer to the domain at work. You
always have the same profile. 2) Even you have different workgroup name and
domain, you can logon domain instead of workgroup at home, and logon the
same username and password on other home networking computers or enable
guest account if you have W2K/XP. You should be able to access most network
resources and use the same profile.

You don't need to do anything, really. The user should always log in under
their domain account, using cached credentials (allowed by default). They
can still access network resources outside the domain, if they provide the
correct credentials...

For example, one way is in a command prompt.
net use x: \\computer\share /user:computer\username

and entering the password when/if prompted. They can then access any other
shares, including printers, on that computer.

This is simple, clean, doesn't require any third party software like
NetSwitcher or MultiNetworkManager, and means only one profile is required.

I don't do that as it's messy. I just set up a new user account with a new
profile. The applications should still be accessible, My Documents should be
redirected to the server via group policy (usually, a subfolder under the
user's home directory) or manually within the profile, and users shouldn't
be storing items on the desktop anyway, esp. when you're using roaming
profiles. In the event that you do need something out of the old profile,
you can take ownership of it on the workstation or server (if using roaming
profiles) and copy it out.
