Help. I have just completed an inplace migration from an NT 4.0 domain to
windows 2003 AD. I have two windows 2003 AD servers. However it kind of has a
feel for the of a windows nt 4 domain running on windows 2003. Plus, Thetwo
servers Both have DNS and the clients which are 85% Xp Pro and have static
IPs aren't able to update DNS with host records. Also, I have 50 licenses.
How must they be set up on the two servers for it to function properly.

Ok... it seems like here your basic issue is that none of your client PCs
can surf. I'm also guessing that your DNS IP addresses were changed during
your migration. If that's the case, what you'll have to do is use Group
Policy Editor to push a policy update, pointing everyone's DNS addresses at
the new servers.

If none of the client workstations are acting as servers, what you can do is
use long-term DHCP (not exactly static, but has the same basic effect in
that a machine wired to a specific location on your cisco gear gets the same
IP every time... just set the lease length in the router to like 50 years or
something.) and let DHCP update your DNS addresses for you... That way the
next time you add or remove DNS servers, you won't hit the same headache
since you'll be able to update just the DHCP server.

This might seem like it presents a new obstacle, in that the way to find
specific stations on the network might be marginally less reliable. That
can be fixed by implementing netbios/tcp and naming each of the
workstations. That way, to access a specific box, just type in its netbios
name instead of its IP.

Hello,

It seems the issue is urgent. If this is the case, it is recommended that
you contact Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS) via telephone so that
a dedicated Support Professional can help you resolve your issue in the
most efficient manner possible. Please be advised that contacting phone
support will be a charged call.

To obtain the phone numbers for a specific technology request please take a
look at the web site listed below.
<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;PHONENUMBERS>

If you are outside the US please see http://support.microsoft.com for
regional support phone numbers.

Regarding your scenario, I think the license is not the main problem. I
agree with Bill that you may recheck the DNS configuration.

Please help me gather more information about your upgrade process and your
DNS configuration.

Q1. Is your DNS integrated with AD?

Q2. Do you point to the DNS server on the clients?

Perform the following steps on the client side to check DNS.

Checking DNS:
===========

1.Use "nslookup <computername>/<IP>" command to check.

For example, use "nslookup 192.168.150.1".
Note: 192.168.150.1 is the IP address of the client.

Can the client contact the DNS server properly?

2.Manually reregister DNS records.

Use "ipconfig /registerdns" command to re_register DNS records and then
re-run nslookup command, what is the result?

3. on the client side, right click My Computer->Properties->Computer name
tab

Click Change button->Click More button->Check Change primary DNS suffix
when domain membership changes

4. Open TCP/IP properties->Advanced->DNS->Check "Register this connection's
addresses in DNS"

We recommend using DHCP to update your DNS addresses for you. Windows
Server 2003 DNS supports DHCP by means of the dynamic update of DNS zones.
By integrating DHCP and DNS in a DNS deployment, you can provide your
network resources with dynamic addressing information stored in DNS.
Dynamic update enables a DHCP server to register address (A) and pointer
(PTR) resource records on behalf of a DHCP client by using DHCP Client FQDN
option 81.

Please refer to the following article for more information.
