NTFRS runs amok |
|
|
Hi,
when changing our DFS topology (that was, deleting a DFS
root on one of the member servers and sharing it as a
normal share on the same server) the ntfrs created stale
staging directories. After waiting for quite some time,
then searching Technet and Google we decided to give it
a try and set the BurFlags to D4 in
"HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NtFrs\Parameters\
Backup/Restore\Process at Startup"
on our DC (W2K3 Enterprise) that holds the domain dfs root.
After restarting ntfrs things got worse. For every DFS link
below the domain dfs root we got at least one Folder_NTFRS_Hexnum
directory, and those won't vanish anymore. Two of the link
targets are local dfs roots themselves, and for this two
there are three ntfrs dirs, it looks like
Foldername
Foldername_NTFRS_Hexnum1
Foldername_NTFRS_Hexnum2
Foldername_NTFRS_Hexnum2_NTFRS_Hexnum3
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Sounds like you set a D4 without setting a D2 on the rest of the servers.
Check out the KB article at http://support.microsoft.com/?id=328492 for
details.

Hi Jill,
you're right, after reading the article you pointed me to and doing
some more research i understand what we did wrong. And cleaning up
would have been really easy if we had found dfsutil a little
earlier :-)
Thanks + Greetings
