i have a client who want to integrate his mainframe system using HIS 2004 and
his machine configuration as follow
Multiprise3000 H50
'VSE/ESA 2.6.0 -
TCP/IP 1.4.0
DB2/VSE 7.2.0
ACF/VTAM VERSION 4.2.0
i remember that there was some considration when it come to VSE and

Ahmed,
What level of "integration" are you looking for? 3270/printing will be fine.
VSAM access won't work (VSE not supported). DB/2 ODBC should be ok, but I don't
have the doco/compat list to hand at the moment.
What about stuff like TI integration with CICS, IMS etc?

DB2 should work fine out of the box with either ODBC or OLEDB.
VSAM I don't believe there is any MS support for. There are 3rd party options
- e.g. http://www.connx.com/products/vsam.html &
http://www.viaserv.com/viaserv/mainpage.htm
TI isn't documented well for VSE support! But I did find one reference that
says "IBM CICS Transaction Server for VSE/ESA version 2 release 1, or later, to
support an SNA LU 6.2 network connection", so as long as you meet these
versions and are ok with SNA LU6.2 as the underlying transport then you should
be fine.
Obviously there are plenty of other 3rd party products, as well as IBM's
CommServer and CTG (Cics Transaction Gateway), that are worth considering too.
You could also use something like MQ Series to provide integration to CICS
transactions with some coding on the mainframe side.
To a great extent it depends what architecture your off-host systems are
developed with. If your off-host environment is 100%
Microsoft/Windows/.NetFramework/COM/ASP.NET etc. then HIS is the way to go.
If you're 100% J2EE/JDBC then probably IBM's WebSphere/CommsServer is the way
to go.
Most folks have a mixture to integrate, so it makes the decisions more
interesting.

Just to confirm a couple of Neil's points:
- The HIS Ole DB Provider for AS/400 and VSAM does not support VSE. We
require the IBM DFM product which is part of DFS. While I believe the IBM
did make a DFM server for VSE, it is apparently older, and does not support
the interfaces needed by the Ole Db Provider for AS/400 and VSAM.
- HIS 2004 (and earlier) support VSE over LU6.2 for Transaction Integrator
as Neil mentioned. From the installation guide: IBM CICS Transaction Server
for VSE/ESA V2R1 or later to support an SNA LU6.2 network connection.
