Domain name change with Server 2003 |
|
|
Has anyone attempted to change a domain name with Server 2003? If so,
what was the outcome? I need to change my domain name from
Blah.Blah.com to Diggity.com. I would like to know what the obstacles
that I might face may be. Any insight? |

If you are using Exchange 2003 SP1 you need the Exchange Domain Rename
Fix-up Tool to update Exchange attributes. If you have Exchange 5.5, 2000
or 2003 (nonSP1) it will not work. It also does not change the email
domains in the Recipient policies. You can get the Rename Fix-Up Tool
here --> http://www.microsoft.com/exchange/updates
All DC's must be 2003, domain and forest functional level must be 2003
The computer you run the rename from (aka Control Station) cannot be a DC,
it should be a member server. It must be running Windows Server 2003.
If you have any Windows 2000 DFS Root servers, they must be SP3 or greater.
And of course you must have privledges, Enterprise admin and if Exchagne is
installed Full Exchange admin rights as well.
Grab the latest version of domainrename.exe here -->

Ok, doesn't sound too awfully difficult. I have two DCs that are 2000,
what happens if I just demote those before I change the domain name and
promote them after?

Won't work. Your domain and forest functional levels must be at 2003 for
you to be able to rename the domain. With 2003 domain and forest functional
levels, you can only have 2003 DC's. You can have 2000 member servers.
You will have to demote them and leave them as member servers, or upgrade
them to 2003.
