Hi,
I have a Win2000 DC and a NT4 Server with Oracle 7. My goal is to install
two Win2003 Servers and be able to keep the AD-information as intact as
possible.
One of the Win2003 will be the new "root server" and the other one will be
the databaseserver (with Oracle 8).
NT4 must be running in the domain for couple of months during the
Oracle-migration and testing. The Win2000 could be removed as soon as
possible.
How can I accomplish this task successfully?

Best regards

Hello,

Thanks for your post.

From your message, I understand that your concern is to install 2 win2k3
servers in your domain while keeping the AD-information as intact as
possible.

I assume that you have a win2k domain now with a win2k DC and a NT member
server with Oracle 7. Is it correct?

To keep the AD-information as intact as possible, it is best to perform an
upgrade process from your win2k domain to a win2k3 domain. In this way, the
domain name will not change. Upgrading an existing win2k domain provides
the easiest and lowest-risk migration path to the new features in AD.

If you want to have a new domain with a different domain name, you can set
up a new win2k3 domain, and use ADMT to migrate users/groups, computers,
services and so on.

Regarding your scenario, the win2k3 domain you desire should have a win2k3
DC, a win2k3 member server with Oracle 8, and NT as member server with
Oracle 7. I suggest you perform a "not in place" upgrade to achieve your
goal.

As a kind reminder, please backup the win2k DC before you take any action.
Also, it is best if you perform the upgrade process during a non-business
time such as the weekend.

Adding win2k3 DC into win2k domain:
===========================

1. Run Adprep /forestprep, Adprep /domainprep on win2k DC.

How to use the adprep command at the command line

erver/adprep.asp

2. Install win2k3 on your new machine and join it to the win2k domain.

3. Promote win2k3 to be an additional DC. This process will replicate
user/computer accounts from 2k to 2k3.

4. Install AD-integrated DNS on win2k3, this process will auto replicate
DNS from 2k to 2k3.

5. Move Global Catalog to win2k3.

6. Switch FSMO Roles to win2k3.

7. Add DHCP role to win2k3.

Please refer to the following KB:

130642 How to Move a DHCP Database to Another Windows Server
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=130642

8. Run for a test period and make sure everything is OK.

9. Demote the win2k DC and make a clean install of win2k3. Promote it to be
an additional DC.

The additional DC in a domain can offer fault tolerance and ensure the
single DC is not overloaded.

The following are some helpful documents for upgrading from Windows 2000 to
Windows Server 2003:

In addition, the domain function level is in Windows 2000 mixed (Default)
when NT, win2k, win2k3 are in the domain. In this level, many new features
are not obtained. You can obtain the features by raising the functional
level of the domain. Refer to the following article for reference.

Hope it helps. If you have any further questions don't hesitate to get in
touch!
