Hi,
what i want is to improve network performance, i have 1 windows 2003 server
sbs ,P4 2.8 Ghz, 1gb ram, 2 80gb discs doing mirror, 1 nic 100 mb and have
sql server 2000 with sp3a.
What can i do to improve network speed? I've read about network teaming, is
that good? both nic's connect to the same switch ? Is clustering better? can
i do clustering with a P3 1000, 1 gb ram, 2 60gb discs (mirror), 1 nic 100mb
or need to be a server with the same caracteristics? can i make clustering
with a server 2003 and server 2000 ?
The network traffic goes all ( or most of the time ) to the sql server, is
it better to do a sql replication on two servers? sql replication
transactional means:
- realtime backup sql data
or
- in case of too many requests ( queries ) it distributes the request to the
less traffic sql server????

can anyone, please, answear those questions??????
where can i find anything about this?

Thanks in advance.
Ren

Clustering is usually for fault tolerance, though they do offer some load
balancing now. The first step would be to put a sniffer on the network and
see what kind of traffic you have on it. This will help you isolate the
bottleneck, you may find that it is not the network at all but you need more
RAM for the server or something. Teaming would work if it turns out to be a
network problem you could bind 2 or more network cards together and us a
round robin approach. You could also think about upgrading to gigabit
ethernet if it does turn out to be a network issue. Lastly if you do decide
to do replication on two sql servers, I would reccomend you install a second
NIC card in each and have replication occur over the private network between
the 2 (you could also go gigabit ethernet here or even fiber).
