I would like to be able to temporarily deny access to my servers for
maintenance. Is this possible in windows server 2000?

You could stop/disable the server service, though that would also not allow
you to use Computer Management or many command line tools remotely that rely
on SMB if that is a problem. If you do such you might want to use the net
sessions command to see the list of currently connected users if any to
notify them of disconnect. Disabling server service will not block anyone
connecting via Terminal Services if that is used however, though that can
also be done in TS Configuration in the properties of RDP. --- Steve
