I have a problem on my main computer where the "Edit in Datasheet" mode
will not work. When i click on that mode button I am presented with a
page that reads as follows:

<snip>
Error

The list cannot be displayed in Datasheet view for one or more of the
following reasons: A datasheet component compatible with Windows
SharePoint Services is not installed, your browser does not support
ActiveX controls, or support for ActiveX controls is disabled.
</snip>

My computer is configured with the following software:

- IE version: 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp1.020828-1920
- Office 2003 Professional Edition
(including Excel version: 11.6355.6408 SP1)
- Windows XP Professional version: 2002 SP1

I have verified my browser security settings with a known good
computer. I have reinstalled office several times and have
specifically installed the following Sharepoint Services components:

- Microsoft Office List Datasheet Component
- Web Capture client
- Windows SharePoint Services Support

I have read all of the posts regarding this error and noone has ever
seemed to have all of the correct components installed yet continue to
have this issue. I need to know if there is a way for me to get this
working without having to send my laptop to the IT department for
re-imaging. This would drastically disrupt my work for several days.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I have checked the ActiveX settings and verified them with known good
setups.

I have an update. I tried to publish a list to SharePoint from within
Excel and was presented with the following error message:

<snip>
Client components for Windows SharePoint Services are not available or
are not the correct version. You will not be able to edit lists
connected to a SharePoint site.
</snip>

I suspect that the Sharepoint services have not registered properly
even thought the Office installer shows them as installed. Is there a
way to manually register a required .dll or to force the Excel to
accept the components? Is there a way that the wrong version could
have been installed as hinted to in the error message?

Thanks for the help!

Check your IE settings, Tools, Internet Options, Security, Custom Level
and check the ActiveX settings.

Check that no Office Products other than Office 2003 products are installed
(or still installed in addition to Office 2003 products)

It could be any non-Office 2003 product that causes this not just the main
ones. (For instance, I suspect, if say Visio 2002 was installed after Office
2003 Pro)

This for instance http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=835162 is a similar
message caused by the presence of both Excel 2002 and Excel 2003.

Microsoft Office Visio Professional 2003 and Project Professional 2003
were also installed. I have uninstalled them and still get the same
error. I tried the reinstall option in Office Installer and still have
the error. Thanks for the input though it seems to not have helped.

Sorry. By "non-Office 2003" I meant non-Office2003 i.e. an Office XP / 2002
level product.

I'm sorry that you tried removing Visio 2003 and Project Pro 2003 (both of
which in my terminology are Office 2003 products) as I result of the
unclearness of my message.

sorry for flailing on this thread ... I've moved it to a new question since
my problem has turned out to not be related to the thread subject.

ok, my problem is bigger than I thought. I'm logged in as a user with admin

add/remove web parts. I added a content editor web part, but I can't add
anything into it - when I open the tool pane and use either rich text or
source editor, it won't let me save the changes, similar to the problem of
editing list data via datasheet view. I can however manipulate list data via
the non-datasheet view mechanisms. Bizzarre. I can't imagine what I goofed up
on during deployment/configuration.

This function requires Office 2003 *Pro* edition.

Small Business edition doesn't cut it and neither does standard.

See this
http://www.asaris-matrix.com/mvp-walsh/Lists/WSS%20FAQ/DispForm.aspx?ID=245
for that info and for details of a way of getting round this.

(If that indeed was your problem)
