Environment: WSS on WS2003 (Web Edition), SQL 2000 on another box.

There have been lots of posts concerning the concept of a master
document library on a top level site, with 'filtered' views on sub
sites. This is attractive from document management perspective. For the
most part this scenario is implemented by way of link lists on the sub
site, or views constructed in FP, via the Data View Web Part. I have
successfully implemented the latter.

This meets my requirements, except it appears the user on the sub-site
must also have access to the master document library, or they will be
challanged for appropriate credentials as they load the list. That's
good, all in all, however I don't want to give sub site users such
permissions. Afterall, segregating users is the rationale for setting
up sub sites to begin with.

I can think of several possible workarounds, all more or less clunky,
but am quite interested in any ideas on how I might contain documents
in a master library, and create filtered views as appropriate on sub
sites WITHOUT giving everyone access to the master.

Thank you,

DAN

I don't see how you can.

You write yourself that the user on the sub-site must have access to the
master document library.

How are you going to achieve this and not give everyone who is getting even
some of the information from that master document library access rights ?

I'd say the only way is to go for several master documents at top-level with
rights to each granted only to those users who will be accessing the info
from that or those doc libs.

You can't as you know give rights to views of a doc lib so different doc
libs seems the only way.
