I've been tearing my hair our for several hours over this
problem, and can't find a solution.
So, maybe I'm missing something very basic but I can't
seem to find anyway of validating or checking the
integrity of list data:

suppose you have a sharepoint contact list.
in this list you have someone's name and an associated
company.

then you have a list custom list of telephone calls.
in this list you store, the company name, person name and
a message.

these are two lookup fields and a rich text field.

It may seem that you have redundant data, with the
person's name could lookup the company name. While this
is true, if you are missing the person's name you don't
know anything, storing the company name at least allows
you to get the telephone directory and call back -
"Hello, we recieved a call this afternoon about a
widget problem ..."

This is an oversimplified example but illustrates the
idea.

sharepoint doesn't seem to offer any way of vaidating a
field's data, it will happily accept a person name and an
unrelated company (so, if this is the case, do I call the
person, or the company?). This isn't only limited to
custom lists, but any custom fields even in predefined
lists (for example issues).

Now, I'm sure this can't be the case. The ability to
validate data is about as basic as you can get. I'm not
asking for cascading dropdowns or anything "complicated"
like that, but perhaps just the ability to reject data...?

So, we decided to use Infopath to create a validatable
form and have that take over the job of inserting data,
until we discover that Infopath isn't able to interact
with list data, only form folders. (reducing somewhat the
image of complete integration with sharepoint.)

Googling around doesn't seem to come up with anything, so
either I'm missing something, or it just can't be done.

I hope someone can shed some light onto this...

thanks,

nick
