DNS issue affecting only Win98 users |
|
|
Hi - I am a bit stuck, we have a site with a mix of Win98 and WinXP users and
a Win2003 Server STD version.
As of two days ago the Win98 users fail to logon, getting the error "No
domain server was available to validate your password"
Nothing has changed - well nothing that I am aware of, there is potential
for settings to have been modified on the server. But from what I can see
they are all the same, normal DNS settings etc.
Does anyone have any ideas? We also started getting a 4004 and 4015 DNS
error about 3 weeks ago, this happens whenever we reboot the server, but the
DNS does come up okay. |

Are you using WINS?
NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled on the DC?
Use 'nbtstat -a dcname' to resolve the NetBIOS name of the DC.

If this is a single DC you can ignore these events at startup as long as AD
starts and is able to load the zones. These events are caused from DNS
starting before Active Directory. You can change the zones to standard
primary to stop the events at startup, but that may not be a recommended
solution depending on your network. Standard Primary zones are not secure
when allowing dynamic updates.
