Domain Server or Member Server? That is the question. |

Hello All,
I need some help making a decision. My classroom has a lab of 10 computers
in which all need to get out on the internet. Do I need a patch panel?
Switch? Router? I want all of the computers to have anti-virus. We are
planning on having more then 10 computers really soon.
So because of the anti virus requirement, I'm not sure if I should run them
through a domain server and push out anti-virus updates to each one or run
them through a member server or router and have anti virus installed
individually on each one. So any suggestions would be most helpful.

I think Bob meant use a router to provide Internet access, and push out
AV updates from the server. Whether you use a DC or not depends on a lot of
things which you haven't specified.

A domain is not a requirement for shared internet access. If you have a
cable/dsl line coming into the classroom you can use one of the popular NAT
routers from D-Link/Netgear/Linksys to provided shared internet access. If
the budget allows spring for something like a Sonic Wall TZ 170 with the
capacity you need for outbound access as it can do a whole lot more
including integrated virus scan, advanced rules capability, and subscription
content filtering. Virus protection needs to be installed on each computer
and the application should be configured to obtain updates automatically
from the internet or server depending on the application.
As for a domain controller, for ten or more computers you will find a domain
very beneficial in administering users/groups and securty and Group Policy
and I highly recommend it. --- Steve

Generally, once you get over 10 users, various Anti Virus corporate or
network editions become cost effective - eg. see:

Most such products include features which enable you to provide a
centralized update solution.
