Creating a Write only shared folder? |

This is being to do my head in. I want to create a number of folders in a
Share, which a particular user has privileges to See the contents of the
folder, can Write new files into the folder, but CANNOT open, ammend or
delete files
in the folder.
Running on Windows 2000 or XP Pro.
If I have a Shared Folder that has Everyone set with Permission to connect
to the Share. I go into Security, add my User called Bob for the sake of
argument.
I assumed that List and Write would be sufficient. However if I do this I
get Write errors. Specifically "the file is on a network drive with create
but no modify privileges"
Anyone help me out with this? I'm going nuts. |

The share itself will need change permissions but on the main security page
of the folder if the user has list and write permissions it works for me on
an XP computer. Try it with a normal text or zip file to see if it makes a

Thanks for replying.
Ok. I'm using Window 2k Pro SP4 here.
I've created my share. The Everyone group has Change Permissions.
I go into Security, add Everyone.Then I tick List Folder Contents and Write.
Apply. Login in as a member of Everyone and again I am unable to Write.
I've read any number of tutorials that says it should work. It just effing
doesn't. Really really frustrating. Any suggestions? |

First, I am guessing that the share permissions are set to Full Control
or, at the very least, Modify. Remember that the most restrictive
permissions between NTFS and share permissions are the permissions that
are in effect.
Second, set the permissions for the folder using the Advanced Security
Settings screen. You may find it necessary to set the permissions for
the folder separately from the permissions for the files in the folder
(use the "Apply Onto:" drop-down list when adding permissions in the
Advanced Security Settings dialog box).

I just tried exactly what you are doing on a W2K SP4 server of mine and it
worked fine. I was able to list and write files to the folder but not open or
delete them. I know the fact that it works for me does you no good, other than
knowing it is possible. The only thing I can think of is to check the advanced
permissions page to make sure there are no users/groups listed that have any
deny permissions to the folder. In my case in special permissions the everyone
group was listed twice - once for read and execute for this folder and
subfolders and again for write for this folder, subfolder, and files. Also
verify that inherit permissions from parent folder is unchecked for your
