I linked all the calendar entries from WSS to my Microsoft Outlook calendar
but whenever I try to modify something or add an entry I get an "cannot add,
read-only file" error. Is it possible to add calendar entries to WSS from
Outlook? Thank you.

No. The intent of Link to Outlook is to allow Outlook to view the data in
it's own user interface. The information in the list must still be
maintained by WSS.
