Regarding HIS and Microsoft SQL Server DTS :

Is it possible to extract data (VSAM files) from the mainframe, utilizing
only TCP/IP not SNA?

Jeff,

The only mainframe interface that allows this is SNA unfortunately, so you
have to use a HIS server. However you can do away with SNA at the network
level if your mainframe is configured for Enterprise Extender. HIS 2004 has an
IP DLC link service that will make all the actual comms to the mainframe be IP,
even though the actual application layer is still SNA.

You can use HIS Transaction Integrator to invoke CICS programs that can
read VSAM files and return the results. Two phase commit would not be
supported.
