I am running a two-node win2000 cluster with IIS configured as a cluster
service. On both nodes, the IIS admin/web services are set to automatic
startup. This was working fine for the longest time except a few days ago,
the IIS service on the inactive node started to complain in EV about not
being able to write log fies. This is expected because the active node has
the shared storage. However, we were not getting this error before. The
only thing that has changed is I moved the shared storage from one device to
another on our SAN. We also started to see a weird behavior where the
cluster is failing over to the inactive node for no apparent reason. We have
run IISSync several times.

Any idea what could be going on? Any resource that you could point me to
for further analysis would be great.

Aren't all clustered services supposed to be set to manual and the cluster
is supposed to start them on the active node only and start them on the
other node during fail overs?

Yep, it sure sounds like that explains it well.

Perhaps the passive node had the web services stopped.

IISSync isn't going to help with services being set incorrectly.

I would recommend going through the checklist
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/enterprise/proddocs/en-us/Default.asp?url=/resources/documentation/WindowsServ/2003/enterprise/proddocs/en-us/sag_MSCScheck_19.asp

On a side note, is there any reason you are using server clustering instead
of NLB?

Yes, manual startup is recommended for cluster services with IIS being an
exception. From what I understand, leaving IIS as automatic makes the
cluster failover a lot quicker because IIS is already running on the other
node.
Besides, IIS was configured as automatic on both nodes and I didn't see
these errors before.

No, it doesn't. Why was it working without complaining before?

Both nodes have IIS running. As a matter of fact, I have another cluster
similarly configured and no complaints there by IIS. IIS running on both
nodes.

This is for 2003, my posting says Win2000. The vbs scripts mentioned on
this article don't exist in 2000.

Clustering was pushed on us by the admin of the box at that time, but we did
try to fight it.

I can think of many scenarios where one of the automatic services wasn't
started. After all, you said that you changed over the storage which
probably means that you moved resources around. I will do some digging to
see if I can replicate it as I am also doing a media (shared storage)
migration to a new frame tonight.

Good luck.
